A Former Coworker's Blog Site

A guy that once worked at my job has moved to New Zealand with his family while his wife pursues higher studies in some scientific field. (Obviously this guy isn't a close friend or I'd have better details.) He has started a blog to let everyone who's interested know what's happening and I have been following his travels. Here's a sample page from his blog:

This really doesn't do justice to the site since the pictures are so clear and colorful.
Dustin, my friend, is traveling around New Zealand with his son and young daughter and his wife in a Winnebago. I like his blog because he includes a lot of pictures and his wit keeps the stories interesting.
I can only imagine what memories his kids will have when they get older and remember the time the family zigzagged over New Zealand.
The pictures are so pretty and it shows a land uncluttered and slower and seemingly peaceful. How different from this area.
The site makes me wish for the opportunity to do something like this. To be with my family as we explore new places and taste new food. Is the air significantly cleaner, what are the people like, are the skies filled with stars at night, do wild animals roam, is crime nonexistent?
Here's the site, if you're interested:

ReDone--the Volvo logo

I have a Volvo, a used 2002 S60 that now has 164K miles on it (yikes!). I've had it for five years now and really like it. I've washed it a few times, taking care to get into nooks and crannies to get them clean, going over the glass and the chrome...and the logo. The logo--apparently I never paid too much attention to it. I know what I thought it looked like but I just didn't pay too much to detail.
As I did some research I found an old logo and upon examining it saw that it still resembled the current one but then I noticed that it had the male gender symbol, you know, the circle with the connected arrow pointing to the right and I thought to myself, "Hmm self," I said, " I'm glad they took that off the logo." Well, it turns out that they have not taken that off the logo.
Going on a volvoclub.org site I found an explanation for the name, the original logo design, and just what that diagonal bar means.
Here is a picture of the original logo design:
In a synopsis, Volvo comes from the latin "volvere" to roll, and Volvo thus means "I roll." (I'm hoping the reference is to rolling down the street and not a tumbling effect if ever in a crash.) The diagonal bar was intended to keep the front grill from falling off and the male gender symbol is intended to pertain to the planet Mars in the Roman Empire and also the ancient chemical symbol for iron. Iron symbolized steel and strength.
And so now, the new logo:Still the circle with the arrow and now the product name is included. The diagonal bar is still a part of the front grill but it doesn't serve a purpose other than the association it makes with the logo. This new logo is definitely an improvement!
But can we talk about the product name on the back of the trunk? This is the new product name on the trunk:
A lot of chrome and the letters are really spaced widely. I don't like it. It was not, in my opinion, an improvement on what was. It looks cheap in appearance and I wish they'd reconsider the old way:

Sometimes what's new is not what's better.

The 5ifth Project

My accepted project 5 concept involves a portable practice soccer goal. A regulation size goal is 8'x24' and my goal would be at least half that size and would fold into a standard sized soft-sided case.
I thought the packaging would be a standard box that would have graphics and type on the front and would have a product breakdown on the back but it was suggested that the packaging be a wrap type band and I really like that idea.
I thought I was going to have to create a prototype that is ~24"x18"x8" but I am relieved to know that I only now have to create a product band around a laptop sized case similar to this:

Whew!

Another set of categories

Here's a site with really defined categories on the first page. I really like it: the type size is very readable and clean, the logo is interesting, the images sharp, the graphics clean, the categories well separated with sub-categories nicely placed.

New Idea for Something Old

I've come up with a few ideas and Jeanne's said that this one is the one she thinks I should expand on. The only problem is that my package prototype would be pretty big so now I'm stuck again. My idea was to have a completely collapsible soccer goal. The goal is not regulation size but is for practice and home use. It would fold down to a compact size and would be made of strong but lightweight aluminum. I imagine that it would be about 30"x18"x6" and I really don't want to make a package that large.
So, I'm at square one again. I had another idea, a portable canopy for traveling teams but that, too, is pretty large and I don't want to make something big.
Here are my other ideas:
  • rubbing alcohol that doesn't burn when used for cleaning wounds
  • all natural make-up in an all-natural compact (Jeanne pointed out that it's been done already)
  • a very flexible "band-aid" for finger joints and for fingertips--better designed than the fingertip band-aids that already exist
I don't know what to do now. I may have to use Nicole's idea!

Structured Categories

A short time ago I got a new phone and I needed a car mount so that when I'm driving I can have my phone easily available. I checked out amazon.com and there so many categories on the site--categories for car mounts, categories for features and services, categories for cell phone bestsellers. Amazon has so many categories it's amazing. If you can't find it on Amazon, it probably doesn't exist. OK, it probably does exist somewhere other than Amazon, but you can find a lot of things on Amazon, just check out all the categories. : )

Postcard of Interest--SHOW AND TELL

Here is a postcard I found really interesting. It's from DSW Shoes. I L O V E shoes and the postcard intrigued me because it showed me what shoes are new in the store and let me know that they are now available. On the flip side I'm told that the more I buy the more I can save. How exciting! Problem is, money's tight so I probably won't buy anything but it's still a good postcard.
It's an oversized card so it gets my immediate attention. The size of it seems to say that it's important and shouldn't be overlooked. I'm not too crazy about the overall style of it. It's a little plain but it does show what different types of shoes are now available.

That mounting tape Jeanne recommended

Here's one of the places where I got my supplies: framingsupplies.com sells the 11"x50' roll for $37.50. They charge insurance (less than 50c) and shipping was a little expensive ($8.64) but it arrived really fast. I placed my order on Tuesday and got it by Thursday.
I'll get the name for the place where I got the boards and put that up soon.

Contrast/Comparison Project

Let me know what you think about the direction I'm taking for the comparison project we have. I started on two different techniques, the first being a more refined approach and the second a light and sarcastic approach.
Here's my topic:
Michael Jackson Through the Years: The Noses and the Women in His Life (the title is a work in progress itself)
APPROACH 1:
Michael Jackson—A Comparative Analysis of the Ascension and Decline of His Career, the Proboscis Malformation, and the Feminine Perspective
Or Michael Jackson, His Nose, and the Women in His Life

Let’s face facts, Michael Jackson was “out there.” A true phenomenon. But why? How did he achieve the grand status as one of the greatest entertainers of all time?
Was it merely based on talent? Did his creation of the moonwalk propel him into superstardom?
Did he get a big learning curve and a desire to stay in the spotlight through his experience with the Jackson 5?
Or was it the women in his life that kept him going, that kept the fire burning and also influenced his appearance?

APPROACH 2: (for the Onion)
Michael Jackson’s Noses Donated to the Smithsonian After a Lifetime of Changes

An unnamed source has donated all four of the former noses of the greatest entertainer of all time, Michael Jackson, to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The noses were held in the vault of the surgeon who performed all the Jackson proboscis modifications. Because of the surgeon’s recent death, and Jackson’s, the noses have been released and are now in the hands of a Smithsonian historian.
Jackson’s first nose, the one he was born with, lasted him through his early years with the Jackson 5. His parents, particularly his mother since his father was too busy beating them, supported him and his brothers but also recommended that he get a nose job since he needed to have a grander appeal to his audience and his birth nose was just plain ugly. While he had the original nose, his skin remained a creamy chocolate—his mother did not complain about that. The surgeon who modified it noted that the excess skin and cartilage weighed about 5 ounces when it was changed.
It was during his teen years that he met and momentarily dated Tatum O’Neal. Tatum, though younger than he, behaved in ways that were far older than Jackson had ever known and kept putting a strange substance up her nose that made her want to touch him in ways that were unfamiliar to him.
It was after this relationship that he released his “Off the Wall” album.
Jackson met Elizabeth Taylor when he was XX years old and created a bond that lasted him throughout his life. She was able to convince him that her stardom as a child was similar to the acclaim he’d reached as a boy.
Jackson’s second nose carried him through his late teen and early twenties. After the initial surgery, Jackson was left with a slight whistle when he inhaled and thus caused him to consider a third surgery. Brooke Shields, his companion for these years, tried to persuade him against any additional surgeries because she felt that it would keep them out of the limelight and away from the Grammy and Oscar parties.
Because of the whistle, Jackson went ahead with the surgery and got a more sculpted nose that cleared up the whistle and also gave him more of a nose like Brooke. The surgery caused his immune system to go into hyperdrive and he then started having light patches appear on his skin. He used this as an excuse to start lightening his skin as he thought that this too would get him closer in appearance to Brooke and thus strengthen their relationship.
Brooke, upon finding out that he had gotten the nose job, was repulsed and ended their relationship. The two remained close for a few years after but their relationship was never the same and Brooke distanced herself from him more and more.
By this time, Jackson had released his mega hit Thriller album. After dancing with zombies, Jackson was overwhelmed with “all the death” and went into seclusion. In this seclusion he managed to emerge long enough to meet Lisa Marie Presley and convinced her that the two belonged together. His argument of persuasion was that he was the King of Pop and her father was the King (in general and in total) and that somehow they could have a king of a child that would ultimately rule the rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, pop and crossover markets.
Their relationship ended after their staged kiss at the XXXXXX awards went awry and Lisa Marie could not understand how a man so fluid on stage could be so immobile in bed. Added to the fact that when they kissed, she noticed that his nose felt artificial and unnaturally small. Devastated that their union did not produce a mega-child, Jackson then went in for another surgery and more skin bleaching. Instead of a mega-child, Jackson created his mega-hit, XXXXXXX and had a thinner and even smaller nose.
While at his dermatologist for his skin problem, Jackson met his future and final wife Debbie Rowe. Debbie would become the baby incubator for two of Jackson’s children. When the first child was born, Michael, another new nose, and Debbie posed for the cameras in what can be seen as the most artificial picture of all time.
Debbie and Michael managed to eke out another child (through what some have called “the turkey baster method”) and Debbie also managed to work with her lawyers in negotiating her settlement for getting out the marriage and walking away from her children.
While Debbie moved out, speculation that Michael’s nose had fallen off during one of his last surgeries flooded the world. The procedure to create the new nose left skin and whatever cartilage was left that weighed only .5 ounces. It was however, the material that went into sculpting the new nose that weighed over 2 ounces.
Jackson’s old nose skin and cartilage from all his surgeries will be housed in the special plastic surgery area of the museum in a display called “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough.”
Along with the noses, vats of the skin brightening cream he used throughout the years were also found. The Smithsonian declined this donation as they thought it would only create problems with containment, as the vat was extra slippery and attempts to store it elsewhere were futile since it kept oozing through all types of container.

Social Issue Campaign

Mitch mentioned the Got Milk? campaign today in class. I never posted anything about the social issue I thought was clever/pertinent/interesting but the campaign I researched was...ta-da...the Got Milk? campaign.
Attached are some of the latest images used in the campaign that started way back in '94 and is still going on today. The milk mustache has become synonymous with the campaign and it uses all types of celebrities--sports, TV and movie actors, singers, etc.
The photography hasn't changed much since the campaign's inception. The person looks at the camera straight on, with the milk mustache, a nice glass of milk, and the "milk" copy.
Here are some sample pictures with current celebs.

Campaign Poster

Had class and got the reviews of my social issue campaign poster and the feedback I received has me confused and dumbfounded. There were so many suggestions that I don't know which direction to take the campaign.
I was pretty satisfied with my concept and I even thought the comps were creative--Lord knows I had some different concepts.
But now where do I take it? I will ruminate about it over the upcoming week and see what I can come up with.

More food photography on the bad quality side

During Valentine's Week I went to a very popular, well-known restaurant in NW Washington with an old friend. (Look at the picture and you can probably figure it out.) The place is popular with celebrities and the president and it's pretty famous. I don't want to say the name of the place but let's just say it's known for its hot dogs and chili.
When we got inside I saw that the line wrapped around the inside of the restaurant and just about every seat and booth was filled. We were guided to seats at the counter and we placed our order. I got a turkey chili dog and my friend got a turkey dog with beef chili and we both shared the huge serving of veggie chili fries.
As we sat there enjoying our meal I looked back up at the menu board and noticed the images that were in place.
The images were old and faded and if a patron had to judge the food by the appearance of the pictures I don't think the line would be wrapped around the inside of the joint or if there would be one-tenth the customers.
The servers were very efficient and our waitress was attentive, just as everyone else was there. My friend would ask for extra napkins, or ketchup, or a fork, or whatever next seemed to pop into his mind and we always got it quickly and without having to wait on our waitress to get it for us.
With all the pluses (and the popularity of the place) I would say that I'm surprised that someone hasn't had the idea to replace the photos. Economics wouldn't be an issue, I wouldn't think, based on the number of people eating there the day we were there. Perhaps they think it lends to the charm of the place, or there is a reluctance to change the established appearance 'cause I don't think the interior has been updated in a long time either.
Would I go there again? Yeah, probably, but it would be more because of the reputation of the place than the draw of the food and certainly not because of the pictures.

Pregnancy Pact

While we were discussing possible social topics for the next assignment, the question about whether there really was a pregnancy pact came up. The story was legit, and not an urban legend. Here's an article about the pact:

To Blog, Or Not to Blog...

...that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer...

WHATEVER!!

Don't feel well but that won't stop me from contributing. Class is tomorrow and I've yet to do anything. (Jeanne and Mitch, don't read that!) I'll pull an all-nighter to get it all done.

I just want to sleep for a few hours but I'll get it done.

Manana, y'all!

Bad Food Photography

At work we usually order in on Fridays. It could be pizza, sandwiches, Chinese food, whatever--it's usually the consensus of those ordering. One of the places we order from is a kabob joint with an Italian name. The food is good, the portion sizes are generous but the online menu needs improvement. The images just aren't that great. The images are bland, the food is flat and in the end it makes it look unappealing. But, based on those who have eaten there before I've ordered and been happy with my selection but if I had to choose based on the images, I think I'd go elsewhere.
What do you think?

Good food writing

In the September issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, on pages 214-219 is the story of Jewels and Jill, two chefs for Jennifer Aniston. This article, entitled "Dinner at Jen's" provides insight into how the two sisters became the actress' cooks and the pleasure they receive in cooking for her, how pleased Aniston is with their help, and how they have all changed from their union. Along with their story are several lively pictures of them preparing food for her and her friends, Aniston serving food, and bright, interesting pictures of food.
The article also includes a recipe for frozen Margaritas and provides a sample menu that could be served any night. The menu that is provided includes several Mexican foods such as tostados and quesadillas.

Bad advertisement for food

I have always hated the old Quizno's ad that featured the stiff, googly-eyed, and dead rodents wearing hats (bowlers and some Napoleon-style contraption) and singing about how delicious the subs were at Quizno's. Really?!
I think the marketing people should have strongly reconsidered their strategy. While I had been a fan of the chain I was instantly repulsed by the newest ad (now a few years old). I loved Quizno's, the sandwiches were tasty and inexpensively priced. When asked where I wanted to eat on Friday--it was an office thing--I most likely replied "Quizno's" but after seeing the ad with the stiff rodents I could no longer eat there. I could not equate rodents with eating. The two just did not correlate.
The only thing I give the marketing staff at Quizno's credit for is being able to create a memorable ad. Repulsive, but memorable.
I invite you to view this ad that ran on TV:

Creative, yes. Nasty, too.

More Snow Predicted

The DC-MD-VA area is predicted to get more than 2 feet of snow starting Friday. This will be the fourth snow of the season.

I love snow, as long as I am safe at home and don't have to go anywhere.
